What RMM is, and why an organisation with dozens of computers needs it.

RMM stands for Remote Monitoring and Management. It is one system that sees every computer, server and network device in the organisation, alerts when something is wrong, and lets you fix it without leaving your chair. This guide explains in plain language what it does, who it suits and what to check before choosing one.

The definition

RMM in three sentences

A small program - the agent - is installed on every computer and server and reports its state to a central system: CPU, memory, disk, updates, installed software, errors. The system gathers everything on one screen and alerts the team when a value crosses the threshold you set.

From that same screen you can act: connect to an endpoint, run a command or script on a hundred machines at once, roll out an update, install software, pull a report. That is the difference between knowing there is a problem and dealing with it.

The team that runs IT - in-house or an outside provider - moves from firefighting to planned work: the fault is visible before the employee feels it, and the fix is done remotely and logged.

What people ask about RMM

What is the difference between RMM and MDM?
The difference is the focus, not the kind of device. MDM/UEM (Intune, for example) is about policy: enrolment, identity, compliance, configuration and the device lifecycle - today on Windows and Mac computers too, not only phones. RMM is about day-to-day operations: continuous monitoring, alerts, scripts, fixing faults, remote control and managing servers and workstations. Many organisations run both side by side.
Does the agent slow the computer down?
Not noticeably. The agent sends short reports and runs tasks only when asked. Load is measured and reported, and if anything is out of line you see it in the system itself.
Can employees see when someone connects?
Yes, and we recommend it. A connection to an employee's screen is shown to them, and every action is logged. Background work - updates, scripts - runs without interrupting.
What about Mac and Linux?
Supported. The agent installs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and network devices - switches, routers, printers - are monitored without an agent.
How long does it take to start?
Setting up the system - a few days. Deploying the agent is done remotely, in groups, without visiting each computer. An organisation of a few hundred endpoints usually sees all of them on screen within a week or two.
Does RMM replace our team?
No. It lets your team see more and do more in less time. If you have no team, you can leave the monitoring and day-to-day operation to us.
